2025 Veterans Cup Round 2 Lake of Menteith
Veterans Cup Round 2 at the Lake of Menteith Sunday 27th April.
We had a cracking turn out of 28 anglers, and a great day of sport was had by all, well, mostly all.
Reports from the last few weeks have been all about the quality and quantity of fish, most of which have been frantically buzzer feeding in the top couple of feet.
Again my wife Audrey and her little band of elf’s from The Rose House in Perth kindly donated our breakfast rolls and Lunch, to be fair though, I still had to get up at 5am to prepare the breakfast rolls 🤦.
Quick check of all things tasty, van packed and off I went, only to realise after 100 yards out the house, I forgot my rods, quick double back and away I went. 🙈
Always great to turn up at these outings and find the buzz in the Carpark, great banter as always, though word on the street was dry fly fishing, which I truly loath, only because I’m gash at it!
So after a breakfast roll, Jock Royan getting his abacus out to pay for the boats and Glen Lamont trying to find his club hat, a quick Monty python briefing, or is it Jack and Victor from said pair and we were ready to go.
Most of the boats turned left to International Bay, Lochend and Butts or headed to Malling and cages, while myself and wee Eck decided to try for a quick fish in Hotel Bay as we knew that area has been fishing well.
Within the first five minutes I had lost three and wee Eck had landed three, here we go I thought, one of those days.
After about twenty minutes or so we headed to International only to be greeted by an absolute frenzy of a hatch, bingo!
I headed in early to prepare lunch around 1215, that times worth two fish at least 😁, as we chatted and enjoyed our soup and sandwiches, while Glen and Jock opted for the cake, we quickly found that there were only a few boats doing well. A quick pointer of flies, tactics and areas to all would ensure a good afternoons sport lay ahead.
So, I’ve been persuaded to tell me ten minutes of carnage. Myself and wee Eck were in front of about ten boats when disaster struck, I was into a good fish, which I subsequently landed, however, as I took the fly out I turned round to get my phone. At this point, the net fell into the water, still with the fish inside, I reach out to try and grab it only to be up to my shoulders in the drink. The fish then started to swim away with the net, panicking I then turned the boat to try and catch it and in doing so propped the drogue. All in front of half the fleet 🙈🙈
Anyway, early days in the Veterans Cup League but after 2 rounds, Ian Macgregor has consolidated his position at the top of the leaderboard with a 1st & 3rd place. Blind Squirrel William Shepherd found 12 nuts in the butts giving Eddie Fullerton a masterclass in dry fly fishing. I just hope Eddie heard the pearls of wisdom. 😳
Absolutely top quality fishing at Scotland’s premier trout fishery, the quality of the fish are untouchable in my opinion, can’t wait for the next round 🎣
