2025 Veterans Cup Round 6 Lake of Menteith

Military Veterans Cup Round 6

With all to play for, we arrived at the Lake of Menteith Fisheries yesterday for Round 6 of the Military Veterans Cup with eager anticipation. Although the water remained warm, overhead conditions were good with cloud cover most of the day. Mostly flat calm though but we canโ€™t have everything.

Lots of banter and advice from those who had fished the preceding day, particularly Steven Mcarthur who was really helpful, in fact suspiciously so! ๐Ÿค” Fish had been caught in the top 3 feet of water and were predominantly feeding on the abundance of fry in the Lake. My boat partner was Joy Penrose-Stupard our first female Veteran and she was made very welcome by the troops and was a delight to fish with.

Lake regular Stevie McArthur hinted that Kateโ€™s Brae and Tod Hole were bouncing with fish so Joy and I decided to head down the road shore. We quickly identified that other than 2 annoying paddle-boards, we were completely alone! Hmmmmmโ€ฆ๐Ÿ™ˆ

The Malling Shore and Butts saw most of the morning action, with 2023 Champion Graeme Ferguson catching very consistently on drys. Lunch was once again a culinary delight. John Paul Maestri and The Rose House in Perth really do push the boat out when it comes to our lunches and we are all very grateful. ๐Ÿ™ Geoff Allen supplemented the sandwiches, pies and cake with his Smoked Trout and Pastrami. Geoff is an absolute wizard on the smoker but often relies upon others to catch the fish ๐Ÿ˜‚

Conditions remained very good during the afternoon session with Fergie reaching his creditable 10 fish limit by 16:00. ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘ Glen Lamont matched his 4 fish in the morning session with a further 4 during the afternoon. League leaders Allan Gamble and Ian Macgregor finished on 7 & 6 respectively which provided them both with valuable points. Going into the final round, 2 points separate the top 3 places which means yet another tight finish.

Good luck to our 23 members travelling to Clywedog for our second UK Championships on 6-7th September. Some are practicing for 2-3 days prior to the event so looking forward to some decent catches. Currently, I believe the fish are pretty deep but with cooler weather heading in this week, that could change very quickly. Good friend, Phil Thomas won the inaugural match at Rutland last year and I fully expect him to be in the hunt again this year.
